Background

For over 45 years, Carlac have been a market leader in the supply of paint and refinishing materials.  They specialise in project work requiring flooring solutions using specialists and high-performance products.

Overview

Factory flooring is one of the many installation services which Prep-Rite UK supply.  With the high use of these floors, our clients need a high-quality end-result which will last.  We have worked with the North East branch of Carlac for many years now.  We consider our working relationship with Carlac to be more of partnership.

We realise that Carlac’s reputation is especially important and we ensure that we do every job to their exacting requirements in the allotted time.  We ensure that efficiency and safety along with the right price and quality are of paramount importance.

“We at Carlac subcontracted Prep-Rite in to one of our largest customers to paint a floor which gets wax and water dripped on it and alan came up with an amazing idea for a cleanable anti slip floor. The job was 500m2. With 2 colours the lads worked all weekend with no problems and the end product was perfect. They left the job very clean and we will be using them again for sure.”

Approach

We were asked to look at the Wax Line in a large car manufacturing plant as they were having difficulty in cleaning the area and staff were slipping on the wet wax.  The previous surface was a tight non-slip finish, so the wax gathered between the aggregate causing it to lose its non-slip properties.  This was causing a lot of issues within the factory area. In the end, it was clear that the floor needed to be removed and re-done.

Firstly, the old painted floor needed to be removed. This was accomplished by dust controlled diamond grinding back to clean, sound concrete to remove all old coatings. We then vacuum cleaned the area of 450m2 and installed a two-coat system of Diverse SF High Build Epoxy supplied by Carlac.  We introduced a random scatter of 0.7-1.2mm Aggregate into the first coat and applied the second coat to encapsulate the aggregate.

Results

In our experience, we have found that using less aggregate give a more successful non-slip result.  We were confident that this would give the best results to our client as the wax cannot clog up in between the aggregate particles.  This means this is easy to keep clean as well as providing the safety they require.

Our client carried out a pendulum non-slip test and we gained the best results they have ever had and now continue with our system throughout the factory where non-slip is required.

The project was completed in one weekend when the factory was closed to alleviate downtime.
